Mr Chips is at the forefront of changes in the industry related to
promoting healthy eating. Many of the Mr Chips products are cooked
in 100% cholesterol free vegetable oil. The company is actively involved
with other companies within the industry concerned with fries quality
of and how they are prepared.
New Zealanders consume over 110,000 tonnes of hot chips each year,
or 7 million portions a week. This means even a small decrease in
chip fat content will have a huge impact on reducing the total amount
of fat we eat, and in turn have an impact on public health.
The industry, including Horticulture New Zealand’s potato product
group, and the National Heart Foundation of New Zealand, has formed
a group called ‘The Chip Group’ which has been involved
in promoting better frying techniques. The aim of this group is to
reduce the fat content of hot chips sold throughout New Zealand by
20%.

The group’s focus has been to promote key ‘Tips on Chips’
messages - to both operators and consumers. These simple tips will
not only reduce the fat content of chips by 20% but will actually
make their operation more efficient and economical. NZQA Unit standards
on Deep Frying have also been developed as part of the ‘Tips
on Chips’ strategy.
